What is a Vacuum Filter Flask
Filter bottles, also known as vacuum bottles, Buchner bottles, or Kitari bottles, are essential glassware in laboratories, widely used in chemical filtration for rapid and efficient filtration processes. These filter bottles are specifically designed for use with vacuum systems, enabling faster liquid filtration compared to gravity filtration.
Typical filter bottles feature a conical body and a flat bottom to ensure stability; a narrow neck for easy connection of various filter accessories; and side arms for connecting vacuum tubing. When used with Buchner funnels and vacuum pumps, filter bottles allow liquids to pass rapidly through the filter medium while trapping solid particles.
Most filter bottles are made of high-quality borosilicate glass, offering excellent heat resistance, chemical stability, and mechanical strength. The thick glass walls are specially designed to withstand the negative pressure generated during vacuum filtration.
Laboratory glass chemical filter bottles are available in a variety of capacities and interface sizes, and are widely used in chemical laboratories, pharmaceutical research, environmental monitoring, and industrial laboratories.

Working Principle of Vacuum Filtration
In vacuum filtration, solid particles are separated from liquid using negative pressure. A filter flask connected to a vacuum pump at the sidearm is used in this procedure. Seal off the flask with a rubber stopper from which the Buchner funnel and filter paper are positioned. The vacuum pump lowers the pressure from the filter flask to create an imbalanced pressure on liquids within the flask to flow through the filter paper and trap solid particles on it. The solid particles are separated from the liquids quickly and efficiently compared to older methods using gravity. It is needed in chemistry labs, pharmaceutical labs, microbiology labs among others to efficiently and quickly separate solid and liquids.
● Filter bottles are widely used in various laboratory environments, including:
● Chemical Laboratories: For solid-liquid separation
● Pharmaceutical Laboratories: For sample purification
● Environmental Testing Laboratories: For water quality analysis
● University Research Laboratories
● Industrial Quality Control Laboratories
● Laboratory glass chemical filter bottles are particularly effective when used in conjunction with Buchner funnels, enabling rapid filtration under vacuum.
